Modular Madness in the Making.

Valerie was marking off spots where everyone was wanting to place their pieces. I knew I needed a place to hang mine but had no idea where. Valerie listed off a few places including the women's bathroom and off we went to check it out. After seeing the square vent on the ceiling between the sinks I knew this was exactly where I wanted my piece. Since all the pieces I was using had very nice curves I liked the idea of keeping it all in a square like the vent. A bit of a contradiction.

I needed a plan of action so grabbed my sketch book and drew a diagram of the layout and took some measurements.

Materials used: Binder coils, hot glue gun, hot glue sticks, scissors, ruler, fishing line, tacks.

Hanging the first 5 strings. Love how you can see the reflection in the mirror and on the vent.

Modular Madness!

Getting started was proving to be tricky for me since I am a very representational kind of girl. Some of my ideas were; to use q-tips to create a giant ear, an outhouse out of empty toilet paper rolls. Lucky for me Mr. Bill had a box of plastic binder coils that he donated to me.

Looking at the coils I could picture a city with big sky scrappers or people. To representational. While playing with the coils and seeing if they could hook easily together I accidentally broke a few rings off.

Breaking the rings off gave me many ideas to create other shapes with them.

Some of my designs looked a clunky and had to be ditched.

After creating a few designs with my rings I sketched out a few of my ideas. My ideas all included hanging the shaped from fishing wire. One idea was to hang the strings from a coil that had not been broken. Another was to hang my designs in the middle of squares created by gluing the coils in squares.

The final word!!

Below are pictures of my final "word as image" photos.

Word as Image

This assignment required us to use words from a newspaper to create a photo. Below are the pictures of my progress.

Carboard Creation Chaos Completion.

My cardboard seashell was a complete failure. The ridges of the shell was the most important feature to me and I could not capture that to my satisfaction.

My son bought a guitar while I was making my final attempt and I liked the way the box was shaped.
I used clamps to help keep the cardboard in place as the glue dried.
I was really happy with my final shape but was back to not knowing how to get the ridges that I wanted.

Tired, stressed, and all cried out"not to mention at my wit's end, I decided I had really like the way the craft paper looked when folded. Although the craft paper did not capture the ridges of the shells I wanted to turn in at least some attempt at completion. Even though I was disappointed and embarrassed by my project I turned it in.
My base has a possibility of working if I was to try again. Starting completely from scratch would be my best bet. Between the frustration and being allergic to cardboard it will be awhile before I consider trying to remake this project.

Human Dots

Our assignment for the Human Dot project was to take one of our six-dot compostions and some friends and create a picture with it.

I'd like to say Thanks to my table family for all the help and for being models in my pictures: Vanessa for helping me make my dots for the WASH add pic, David for taking the pics, and Ryan for his artistic input. I'd like to say a special thanks to Sam for modeling, along with David and Wendy from the M/W class. Was awesome of all of you to take the time out of working on your projects to help.

Dot-to-Dot

We were given black and white photos from The Wall Street Journal and were told to make a composition using only 6 dots to recreate the photos.

Next we were given index cards with an adjective on each. Using only 6 dots per adjective we made compositions to show our adjective. (Will post pics of those later)

Cardboard Creation Chaos!

Our assignment was to pick and item and recreate it on a large scale using only carpenter's glue and cardboard. I seen a shell and knew immediately I wanted to it and that it would be so easy. I started out by layering shell shaped cardboard that progressed in size. I then planed on peeling of the paper on the cardboard so I could use the grooves as the shells ridges. My bubble was burst when I was told it would not be to scale.

My next idea was yo use craft paper and fold it like a fan to get my desired ridges of the shell and have them more to size. Unfortunately the paper would not bend properly for the upper part of shell that folds over.

Idea number three was to fold the corners of one end in then fold the rest down. After that I wanted to trim the other end to round it out. You guessed it, that didn't work the way  I thought it would.

Attempt number four. To make arches and gradually get smaller, then add ridges after. Might work but I was having trouble transitioning to the next size, plus I am running out of time.

Now I need to decide if this last idea is going to work or i should move onto another. *sighs* I did however find out I don't have to make it hollow.
